CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The US Airways Education Foundation has awarded grants totaling $50,000 to five Charlotte-area nonprofits: the Allegro Foundation, A Child’s Place Of Charlotte Inc., Junior Achievement of Charlotte, Freedom School Partners Inc. and YWCA of Central Carolinas.

Each organization was awarded $10,000.

The funds are part of US Airways Group Inc.’s 2010 Community Education Grant Program, which provides college scholarships to dependents of US Airways employees and education grants to nonprofits in the airline’s hub cities of Charlotte, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

The Tempe, Ariz.-based carrier (NYSE:LCC) operates more than 3,200 flights per day to some 200 destinations in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East. Its largest hub is at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

A US Airways jet awaits U.S. domestic boarding.
