CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Charlotte Mecklenburg school (CMS) district’s first day of school is August 25th. More than 2,000 homeless students will be walking the halls. The fear is they may not have the school supplies they need.
This concerns the Charlotte Junior Chamber. That’s why the organization is partnering with A Child’s Place to get the community involved.
“When we found out there were 3200 homeless kids in CMS school – that’s unacceptable,” Charlotte Junior Chamber member David Hoffman said. “We want to make a difference.”
The group is having a Back-to-School Stuff-a-Thon tonight. It will take place Tuesday at Buckhead’s Saloon from 6-9pm. People can come a donate paper, pencils, bookbags and other supplies.
“These gifts, the small packs of pencils or paper is saying to our kids,” A Child’s Place Executive Director Annabelle Suddreth said. “Our community cares and we need you to succeed.”
