What does your child’s bedroom look like? Is it clean, quiet, private and comfortable? Most of all, can you count on it to be there when you need to rest or be alone?

Young Damien dreamed of having his own bedroom in a stable, dependable place, but the various places he slept when his family was homeless were a far cry from that longed-for ideal.

Like all the children of A Child’s Place, at one time in his life Damien’s family moved around a lot.  To say that his living situation was unstable would have been an understatement. With his mom and four brothers and sisters, Damien wearily bounced around among many shelters and temporary housing as his mother looked for work. No one was surprised that Damien had behavior problems and below-average grades at school. But A Child’s Place wouldn’t give up on Damien, and wouldn’t let Damien give up on himself.

Recently, Damien provided an amazing glimpse of just how dramatically ACP’s efforts paid off.

As campers gathered poolside for their first swimming lesson of the summer, some A Child’s Place staff immediately recognized Damien, now a rising junior in high school.  He had last visited the pool as a My Place camper, but this summer he returned to make his debut as a My Place swimming instructor.

Damien proudly shared that his grades are good and he’s on both the high school football and basketball teams. He currently lives with a relative, which has allowed him to stay at the same high school for the past two years. That is a decision that Damien himself made. “It’s wonderful to know that children formerly served by A Child’s Place are flourishing today, doing well in school and feeling a desire to give back,” reflected ACP Program Director Kim Parker.

Or as Damien said about his swimming class at My Place, “I want to help them just like y’all helped me.”

A new school year reminds us that A Child’s Place helps homeless students like Damien because hundreds of you join him in the desire to “pay it forward.” On Damien’s behalf, we thank you for your generosity. Being there for homeless children is so important. Every gift makes a difference one child at a time!
