Making a Difference for Homeless Children and Their Education:
A Community Collaboration
This document examines Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ (CMS) process for identifying McKinney-Vento children and the intensive services offered to these students in collaboration with A Child’s Place (ACP). It provides an outline of what is currently being done for homeless students in Charlotte, NC; identifies areas for improvement; and acts as a guide, showing how one community leverages available resources to maximize support for children experiencing homelessness. This document combines a narrative of the service process with success stories and personal perspectives from many of the people involved. The appendixes include letters and forms used by CMS and ACP.
