A Child’s Place: Erasing Child Homelessness through Advocacy and Education

A Child’s Place Program Manager Kelly Cates knew early on that she wanted to make the world and her community a better place. Since 1989, this Charlotte nonprofit has worked to “erase the impact of homelessness on children and their education.” During the 2014-2015 school year, A Child’s Place helped 2,075 homeless kids.Working with children from kindergarten to 8th grade living in unstable housing, such as cars, campsites, homeless shelters, pay-by-the-week motels/hotels, or living doubled-up with friends and family, A Child’s Place helps remove the disadvantages and barriers to educational and personal success. As most homeless families are working poor, a variety of programs are in place to ensure both the child and their family are supported for maximum success.

Food Boxes Needed for Spring Break by March 30

100 families need assistance in the form of food boxes this break

Warmer weather brings with it spring break and intercession at our partner CMS schools. While it is nice for students to be on break, the extended time out of school often causes an extra strain on families experiencing homelessness. The two meals and a snack our students receive daily at school are an important supplement to the monthly food bill.

Host A Fundraiser Toolkit

Though A Swine Evening is the only fundraising event hosted by A Child’s Place, we are always excited to help promote events organized by outside individuals and groups on our behalf. Dozens of events occur throughout the year including sports tournaments, bake sales, fashion shows, raffles and auctions.
